Power to Gas

Germany for instance has a wide and in detail developed network for natural gas with a total pipeline length of 460.000 km. This gives the opportunity to transport energy in form of gas after converting the excess power from renewable and conventional power plants by electrolyses and subsequent biological and catalytical methanisation to methane gas. So existing infrastructure can be used to transport excess energy simple and efficient to the point of use without the necessity of a costly extension of the grid.

Methane gas can be stored in already existing caverns and the pipe line network as well as retransformed to electrical power in already installed gas power plants or used for heating. Furthermore methane is perfectly suitable as a fuel to operate cars.
